Hi, Yes you can, bare root only means the plant is not in a pot of soil and there is little or no foliage on it, it is wrapped in something to keep the roots moist until you plant it in soil.

Q: how late can you plant strawberrys in central new york?

You can plant them right through the fall, as long as you can work the ground. The biggest issue is that you want the roots to be well established, so that when the ground freezes, it does not heave the plants up out of the ground. You can prevent this by hilling your plants and then covering them with plastic or a good, heavy mulch. I've planted during every season (except winter, of course) and as long as I understood the dangers and prepared for them, I have had no problems. Hope this helps.

To give your plant a chance to grow roots at their new site I put the roots in a bucket of water for an hour before landing and then placed them in the dirt. If you do not have time to plant the plants during the day, I soaked them overnight and then placed them in the dirt. Mine are growing nicely. Be consistent on the watering and you will be fine.
