Fascinating, beautiful book

I bought this book for my daughter who will be studying graphic design in the fall. It is a wonderful book filled with examples of the author's top 100. From small concepts, such as font usage, to the large architectural realm, it is covered well within this book. Each of these topics can be covered further through some simple research, in case you want more in-depth understanding. This book simply gives a brief overview of each of each subject area and a few examples. Makes for a great conversation starter as you can flip through the pages and be inspired or forced to look at a subject differently.Overall - a great primer into the world of Graphic Design.

Graphic Design

This is an excellent book on graphic design. Does not spend chapters beating you over the head with a history of graphic design and snobbery. This just explains what, when, and how. Giving examples that show how it was used, when it was used, and then gives you great ides on how to use it now.

Fantastic Read, Great for Ideas

I teach Graphic Design at a High School and bought this book to bring my students more Design History, techniques, and ideas. This book is great! I just wish it wouldn't be a copyright nightmare to copy it and share it with all my kids, because it is great. There are a couple movements that are a bit PG13 - R, but that's art. This book will definitely be used a lot in my class.

Very small text

The concept / design of this book is great. It was very hard to read the fine print… which is how the bulk of the info comes across. That’s the only negative. Great handbook for quick reference.

THE CORRECT WAY OF LEARNING GRAPHIC DESIGN

A lot of people think that graphic design is best learnt through spending hundreds of grants going to design schools. This is BULLS***. If you happen to be aspired to become a graphic designer wandering off on this review, think twice. Do you really expect an equally fair learning experience considering what you have paid for in art schools? Will those who really have their positions in the industry even care about teaching? When have you ever heard of artists with real money and true power voluntarily commit their life to art education? The answer is probably none. I came from a country in which all teachers are either people who cannot survive in the society or those who are lazy and lame. America is much better, but I believe things are more or less no difference.Though without much credibility to say, my opinion always remain strongly that graphic design is only effectively learnt through yourself's exhaustive observation and analysis on great design projects. Is learning a foreign language difficult? Absolutely. But why isn't your mother tongue the case? Because you were simply exposed too much of it and you practice it extremely often. This is the same thing with graphic design. Art is also a kind of language. By extensive observing and practicing, you eventually will get a hang of it. Period. It is that simple.

Beautiful, Powerful and Intoxicating

I can't say this is the summation of Graphic Design, but it is a consummation of sorts. This is a visually stunning presentation of design elements that have brought the art from early writing to the dazzling art form is is today. Some people may quibble over the impact of certain cited advances or failure to include other inventions, practices and processes. However, the volume is stunning in its depictions, glorious in its explanations and a wonder to instill wonder in readers.Wow.

This book is a great source of inspiration.

I use it when I'm in the middle of a project and hit a brick wall. I thumb through this book, find an idea I like, and either draw inspiration from the given examples or research it more. Also, the book's layout is perfect. Just the right amount of info to illustrations, so I don't feel the slightest big overwhelmed going through this book.

Steven Heller is the top art director, author and designer working today

This book is one of his best. You learn from what he writes and how he presents his ideas. We are so fortunate to have such a unique talent in the business to continually help to raise the standards of design and aethetics. I wait for each new Steven Heller book and I am never disappointed. He has written a number of books on the history of typography and design and he always is able to find a new perspective and new material to spotlight.
