Excellent for my purposes.

I am not a Yeshiva student. I am not even a "serious" student of Torah or Talmud, if you would consider "serious" being someone who toils with these texts and other Jewish texts for hours a day. But, nonetheless, I wanted to delve into the wisdom of the Talmud. In this Artscroll published, Schottenstein Edition, you will find the Talmud portion neatly laid out in Hebrew on the left side page, and the English translation on the right page, with extensive footnotes, which often take up an even larger portion of the page than the actual translation. This is not a bad thing at all! It gives further elucidation and insight into what the Sages of the Talmud were trying to convey. If you are interested in studying the Talmud, but are not yet fully prepared to purchase the complete Artscroll Talmud, which is a tremendous set of over seventy volumes and can be bought through Amazon.com for just under two thousand dollars (a substantial discount when compared to buying directly from Artscroll), then I say buy this book or borrow it from your local library to see how you like it.This item is the first book of Talmud Bavli, the Babylonian Talmud, which came after the Talmud Yerushalmi, the Jerusalem Talmud. The Jerusalem Talmud, I have heard, is an exceedingly difficult text to grapple with, so most Yeshiva students start with this Talmud. Artscroll is currently in the process of publishing the Jerusalem Talmud as well.Based on this volume of Talmud alone, which is only the first part of Tractate Berachos, I would say that it is definitely worth it to invest your time in reading this edition of Talmud, and if you really like it, purchase it, or, if you like, the entire set.Five Stars! L'Chaim!

If your not into Hebrew, stick with English only

This is a quality investment for those English speaking Hebrew studying students. The book itself is so well made it’s almost a shame to want to open it. It’s stunning! However, once opened, you will see quickly the significance and benefit to your study’s. The insights are incredible. I’m not only recommending this book, I’m Highly Recommending this book! 👍♥️😇

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

If you're going to read the Babylonian Talmud in English, what is the ULTIMATE edition? This is a question I ask myself as I plan on studying Judaism one of these days. There are a few unabridged English translations of the Babylonian Talmud, one of which being Neusner's 22-volume The Babylonian Talmud: A Translation and Commentary which is a bit more accessible and cost-effective to the average reader of English. But after much research, I have come to the conclusion that the SCHOTTENSTEIN TALMUD is probably the "ultimate" version to get--but a lot of this hinges on whether the reader has a knowledge of Hebrew.I only purchased this first of 70+ volumes as a reference and comparison. Even so, I haven't had time to read it, but I have had time to collect a few first impressions, detailed below.EXTERNAL IMPRESSIONS:--This is a VERY fancy and impressive-looking book. On the cover, the title and subtitles of the volume are in gold print and there is a detailed and raised "Schottenstein emblem". The title of "Talmud Bavli" is also raised on the cover.--The book has a cloth headband/endband. You can open this book to the very center page and lay it perfectly flat without having to worry about pages falling out.--For English readers, one possible negative is the fact that this book is BACKWARDS from our usual books. Here, when held properly, the spine faces your RIGHT side. As you read the book, the pages are also ordered so that you read the RIGHT page first, then the left one.--There is also a cloth bookmarker integrated into the spine of the book.INTERNAL IMPRESSIONS:--The first 23 pages list the names of Talmud patrons and scholars. Honestly, there is not much of interest as these pages are essentially a long-winded "Credits roll".--After the "Credits roll" there are 9-10 pages of Preface and Introductory material.--As for the actual pages of the Babylonian Talmud, they usually look like this:On one side, at the top, you'll have the English translation, with the literal passages in bold. In line with each English sentence is the Hebrew writing to go with it. Each page is usually half-full with footnotes--readers with poor eyesight might want a magnifying glass. On the opposite page, there is the complete Hebrew text. A vertical grey bar indicates what section of the Hebrew text the opposite English translation is referring to. The heart of the Talmud is in a large bold print in the middle of the page. Surrounding it are presumably the footnotes. These satellite passages look as if they're written in a smaller font than even the English footnotes.--At the end of the book there is a 5-page Glossary (in English), which is immensely helpful in understanding the many vague Hebrew words. It covers everything from "abandoned corpse" to "mikveh" to "zuz".--Following the Glossary there is also a Scriptural Index that makes it easy to reference a Biblical passage to a Talmudic one and vice versa.OVERALL IMPRESSION:If you can read Hebrew and English, then this is probably the "ultimate" English translation of the Talmud. But for those that can only read in English, seeing that literally half the book is in Hebrew means that overall this is a poor investment. For the English-only student of the Talmud I would recommend this: Get an ENGLISH-ONLY unabridged translation of the Babylonian Talmud--such as Neusner's, linked above--and then buy only the individual Schottenstein volume of a Tractate or Chapter if you come across a topic that you'd like more commentary on.Production-wise, this is certainly a quality book, but as I've shown, it is not for everybody and that hinges largely on whether you can read Hebrew.

More than pleased with this edition

I bought this first volume with moderately-high expectations, all of which have been exceeded. I spent a fair amount of time researching this particular edition of the Talmud before I purchased it because I wanted to get a copy that I could study for years to come: this is that book. I was only going to by a copy of the Talmud that contained both the Mishnaic Hebrew as well as the Aramaic. The Schottenstein edition contains both the original languages and an English translation. The commentary in the footnotes is immensely helpful and contains many extra quotes from well-known sages and Rabbis of the past. This is my first time studying the Talmud and I'm going through it page by page to familiarize myself with its style and contents. My purpose is not academic but merely as an interested reader wanting to understand one of the more influential books in religious history. i will no doubt continue to purchase each proceeding volume as I finish the preceding one.
