The Dover edition binding now MUCH better...

I got this to replace a copy of the older Dover edition with the glued binding. I've had that one for going on two decades and it is on the verge of falling apart at the spine (and even so, at about $8 at the time that I bought it it was a great deal). This new Dover copy with a sewn binding is MUCH better, and kudos to Dover for improving their products, which have always been a good inexpensive option. Now there isn't that crinkly paper at the gutter and it's now much easier to use at a keyboard without having to clamp it down somehow. And of course the greatness of the music speaks for itself. A very good deal at about $15. Highly recommended.

Simply an awsome compostion

The Art OF Fugue is one of my favorite of Bach's life work. I first listened to the Emerson String Quartet version and loved it. I got this edition to study TAOF. The print is large, well spaced, very easy to read. The book itself is quite thick, as this substantial work also includes A Musical Offering. An outstanding value, better I doubt I will find.

Outdated but Inexpensive

Another in Dover's great series of Bach scores. These works are photocopies from the old Bach Gesellschaft edition, which was great in the 19th and early 20th century. Pages are well-reproduced, well spaced, and easy to read. A wonderful way for musicians on a tight budget to acquire masterpieces!

Five Stars

It great to have both the Art of the Fugue and the Musical Offering in one book.

The Kindle edition is unusable (this review does not apply to the print edition)

I bought the Kindle edition of this score. All the notes (and staves, and clefs, etc.) are so blurry as to be almost unreadable. The explanatory text is fine, so the problem is not in my device. Moreover, I tried it on two different devices, and both via the web and the iOS app, and in all cases, the music was blurred. Other titles do not have this problem either.Accordingly, I returned it for a refund. I hope they will fix this problem in the fullness of time; but I was not given an estimate of when that would be, if ever.

Wonderful open score presentation of The Art of the Fugue - PERFECT for study

This is a STUDY edition rather than a performing edition of JS Bach's "The Art of the Fugue" and "A Musical Offering". I suppose you could bend it back and break the spine in order to get it to lay flat, but there are already many great performing editions of these works. So, why not study from your performing edition?Simply, this provides "The Art of the Fugue" in open score. That is, each voice has its own line so it is clear which voice leads where. If you want to study how the fugues work, or make arrangements for multiple instruments, this is a critical help. In standard two stave editions the voices cross so much that one has to be extremely careful to get the voices right. Here it is quite simple. The standard two stave system for playing the work at the keyboard is also provided, but it is really too small to read at a keyboard. Again, the purpose is for study.Another added bonus for the student is that the alto voice uses the alto cleff and the tenor voice uses the tenor cleff. So, the student gets practice reading C-cleffs in addition to the standard G and F cleffs (the standard piano cleffs - treble and bass cleffs).Highly recommended for the student who wants to study these works, learn more about counterpoint and fugue, and may want to try his hand at transcribing them for a small ensemble.

Best Ever

This book is great. If you like to watch the music as it is being played, this is for you.You could play the pieces from this book as well, but there are better publications for that.

Essential for Bach enthusiasts

Beautifully presented. This shows the great man at the pinnacle of his contrapuntal powers. A must for Bach enthusiasts and those who wish to observe fugal writing without parallel.

Very good edition of two of the major works of J.S.Bach

Wonderful printing and quality paper, as always by Dover. The edition of A Musical Offering is well organized, and the solutions to the canons are offered in an appendix, which is cool, though the whole idea was to create musical cross-word puzzles; it works tho - you can come up with your solution, and check the offered solutions. There are also realizations of the figured bass of the continuo for the trio sonatas. I have no problem with that tho I think most keyboard players who specialize in the baroque would have no trouble with a realization. Those who aren't fluent with this notation would do well to find their own realization. The text for the Art of Fugue is a little more problematic. The original versions have only adjacent clefs, so you often have to read several C clefs. Most keyboards players are no good at reading C clefs - it's often only conductors and composers who can read them fluently. So, the Dover edition has a two staff piano reduction of all the fugues and canons under the staffs. I find this too accommodating. If you're going to learn counterpoint, species or otherwise, you will have to learn the clefs - Fux, Schönberg, et al. You have to learn the clefs...Very convenient for lazy musicians.

Excellent edition.

Excellent edition. Recommended. Great to have both art of fugue as well as musical Offering in one book. Musical Offering is very well written with all the riddles and etc. Art of fugue has both open and closed score which is great. I use the open score to sight read through four voices for practice. It's great since SATB are in soprano clef, alto clef, tenor clef and bass clef respectively. Non of this modern treble clef substitute. Well done!

Absolutely necessary for any Bach lover

This is a fantastic collection that not only includes the original scores (in many cases open) of both the Art of Fugue and The Musical Offering, but contains keyboard reductions in either separate pages or underneath the open score in the traditional treble and bass clefs. The book came fast, is very light and easy to break the spine. I'm very pleased.

Buen artículo

Me gustó la compilación de las dos obras completas sobre todo como apoyo teórico en materia de composición.
