The Forbidden Woman (European Women Writers)

I loved the writing, almost like reading poetry (which I don't generally seek out as a genre), but the subject matter is difficult to stomach. This book made me feel "privileged" to live in the "west" where gender equality is commonly accepted as the right direction to head towards, but totally depressed at the realization of how far we still have to go in so many parts of the world, and the abiding question: Where does religion figure in all of this???
