Q: can you have it open on the right instead of left?

I needed mine to open on the left also. After looking at it closely, I realized all you need to do is flip it around with the hinges on the left "BEFORE" you put the back on. Turn it around so the mounting strip with the holes are at the top. There is no need to drill any extra holes. The only thing that will be different, is that the magnetic latch will be on the bottom instead of the top. Manufacturer should have put the latch in the middle in the first place so it could be hung either way. One extra note, it comes with a chrome knob. I prefer a bronze knob to match the other in my bathroom. You can easily replace it with one of your choosing.

Q: Can you set it on a dresser instead of mounting it on a wall?

That is what I wanted to do but unfortunately the door is too heavy and it tips over. I ended up having to mount it as you would not be able to keep anything in it and open the door.

5.5 in includes the trim edge and door. The interior is 4 in deep. I keep bubble bath, bandages and wash clothes inside. You can see things through the glass.
