Q: Are these actually plants?

They are plant roots, many of them have also started growing.

Q: Would they work in hot Az??

They will grow in zones 3-8, but need plenty of shade in zone 6-8.

Q: How deep should they be planted?

Not very deep, just enough of a hole to comfortably spread out the roots, making sure the crown from which the plant will sprout peeks above the ground.

Q: Will the plants be marked which type they are ?

No they won't. The plants are very healthy, BUT I ordered the packet of 6 bare roots and received 3 that are a solid green and 3 that are green with light green border and stripe. I was disappointed. The picture is deceiving. There are no instructions or anything.
