I ordered one canister and received one 32 fl. oz. (1 quart) container. One would assume that a six pack would be 6 quarts or 1.5 gallons.

Q: How does this compare to Coleman fuel that many of us have been using for years?

It's cleaner, and it burns more completely and hotter than Coleman's. MSR Superfuel is more pure due to being more carefully refined to remove the other components of distillation. That what makes for more complete combustion, consuming more of the total ingredients, thereby burning hotter. When comparing the MSDS of Superfuel to Coleman Fuel, you can see that they are both essentially "white gas," specifically a distillate of petroleum that is very lightweight and boils at a low temperature, known as light hydrotreated distillate of petroleum, with identifier CAS No. 68410-97-9. The MSR brand is more pure, 95%-100% pure with a little bit of benzene. The Coleman Camp fuel has a lot of other byproducts either left behind or added, up to 15% cyclohexane and up to 25% hexane, and those are just the two they were forced to list. All crude oil pumped from the ground is different. Each has a unique formulation, called an assay. That results in each crude oil refinery designed differently, in order to handle one nearby source of crude. The result is a series of distillation processes that yield slightly different white gas from each refinery. The stuff that Coleman buys would vary from supplier to supplier. So what MSR is doing is eliminating almost all that variation through careful purchasing, or through additional refining. I always just bought a gallon of white gas in the town I landed in, filtered it into my MSR Whisperlite and never had a problem. For me, the dramatic difference in price wasn't justified by the benefit, as I sort of need that hundred dollars. Still I'd buy this if I had the cash.
