The Most Effective “Tool” I Have Found for Flats

I don’t take the time to write that many product reviews these days being wearied from all the requests for varied reviews these days but I did want to circle back on this particular product to encourage someone looking for the best way to repair a flat tire out on the road IMO. I have tried several options including a couple of high quality mini pumps and a CO2 charger. I probably average about one flat every ten months so a mini pump is a good option for me but whenever I did have a flat it was a “big deal” since it is very labor intensive to get enough volume and pressure in a tire with a mini pump. Enter CO2’s, and they are great but on most chargers you don’t have a way of knowing exactly how much pressure is going into you tire and it goes in so quickly that if there is an issue you don’t really have time to correct the issue before it creates a bigger problem. I stuck with CO2’s and their shortcomings UNTIL I had a flat and pulled out my charger to find that it was completely corroded to the point it no longer worked so I was left to get home using my tiny “as a last resort” mini pump. When I got home from my ride I went online and began searching for a better option. Enter the Topeak Mini Morph With Gauge; got my first flat with it yesterday and was super pleased with how it performed. I was able to get 65 psi in my 700 x 32 tires in a very short period of time and with moderate effort. The flat happened on the first 1/3 of my ride so an added benefit was that I knew exactly how much pressure was in my tire and didn’t have to spend any time in my mind wondering so I could enjoy the rest of my ride. I have found that with the tiny gauge you are better off using bar over psi to measure since the gauge is pretty small (it is just easier to read). Also I did remove the little tab that hold the fold out “foot pad” since I found it a little difficult to open when snapped completely together and I would not want to be fiddling with this with cold winter hands if that issue ever arose. Lastly, I wear cargo bibs verses regular bibs when riding for added storage and I put the pump in one of my “pockets” on the back of my bibs and I don’t know it is there until I need it. I have heard other folks say that the pump could fall out of a jersey pocket and no doubt this would be possible but with added protection of my jersey covering my shorts and the fact that the pockets of the shorts don’t allow for a much movement of items placed in them I have had zero issues with the pump even moving around. Anyhow, signing off, this pump has just been a “God send” and I wanted to share my experience with anyone who is looking for a better solution for flats when riding. Oh one more thing. I did consider one of the new to the market mini electric pumps (ex. Fumpa) but for me were that you have to remember to charge it (don’t have a lot of flats), it has somewhat limited capacity, I use TPU tubes and the heat generated by these electric pumps can melt the plastic valve stems. Anyhow, hope this review helps someone with their decision.

Big Mini?

The Topeak Mini Morph (MM) is a pretty conventional single action compact pump with a few differences that make it better than many other compacts IMO.First, it inflates about as fast as my double action Blackburn, which is thinner and about as long as the MM. This means (in my mind at least) that the larger diameter barrel of the MM really is a functional feature that aids in moving more air, than you might expect from as small a pump as this is. If "HV" was a buzzword back when this was first released it probably would have been marketed as such...The "foot pad" and T-handle definitely make pumping while hunched down to reach the pump easier than if it didn't have them, but don't kid yourself: if you're taller than 4'2" this pump is too small to use comfortably for more than 45 seconds. The saving grace is that the short, but functional hose allows you to reach higher tire pressures without having to spend energy on not snapping off your valve stem (like direct attachment mini pumps require you to do ...and you might still break a valve anyway). In summary: the Mini Morph is a very decent compact pump with good, but not best in class construction quality, a very secure and functional head, somewhat rapid inflation compared to other pumps with it's overall length and better ease of use when compared to similar products that lack a hose. It's pretty much the perfect pump for any bike that has some extra pack space and will be logging enough miles that is could get frequent use, it would be my go-to for a tourer or commuter in the under $50 price range. It was probably a revelation when first released and it's still a very solid combination of quality, results and features, especially in light of the asking price, but it's not really a life changer and it's still too big for folks who want to pack a really minimalist repair kit (my road bikes have CO2 inflators in the seat pack, rather than *any* pump, let alone a monster like the MM).

Tiny but mighty! This works great!

I was skeptical about getting a bike pump and carrying it on my bike. I've not had a flat tire since I was a child. Here we were, riding along the trail when we came upon a rider who had been pumping his tire and had zero luck filling it. We pulled out this tiny little bike tire pump and offered to help. Wow! This little thing pumped up his tire in no time. Turns out the larger pump he had, had a hole in the hose.We sent the other rider on his way, packed up our gear and headed on.Turns out the rider we helped was the owner of a bike shop! We happened to stop in to check out what they had. He immediately recognized us and offered his thanks. He said he's not come across such a small pump that worked so quickly. He took pics of the pump and said he needed to get these in his shop. If that's not a solid endorsement, I don't know what is.

Mini Morph

This is the second Morph I have bought. These are super easy to attach to a bike and come with all the hardware you need. I have the full sized one on my bike and I placed the mini on my wife's.I think the mini is a little harder to use, but that may be because I'm used to the larger one and my hands are big and I feel like I have no room on the mini. The mini has a fold out "step" to put under your foot while you pump, but it's small and awkward to keep it under foot. The pumping aspect is super easy and this pump, just like it's big brother, has the ability to pump different stem styles by switching the parts in the head around. It has fold out handle so you can get some power on your pumps. It's like a mini transformer for airing tires. It's also a Topeak product and I have never had any issues with anything from Topeak. It's my go to for bike tools and maintenance, but I probably jinxed myself by saying that.
