Ring Access Controller Pro 2 – Professional installation recommended

I purchased this as a homeowner to install on an automatic gate for my property. No wifi so I needed a cellular option. I’d done some research ahead of time, and the installation literature I found online was not very helpful so I was expecting to have to figure this out on my own. The instructions that came in the box were completely different and much more helpful, so it was very straightforward to wire into my gate controller. I’m using the normally open relay part. The setup process is also very easy, you do have to call a support phone number but if you start setup in the ring app, it gives you a button to call the dedicated support number for setting these up and I was talking to somebody within a couple of minutes. No issues with “trying to find the right person who knows how to set these up” as some other reviewers mentioned, so they seem to have streamlined it. Representative was very helpful and within about 10 minutes I was good to go.It would be nice if there was some kind of feedback mechanism so it could report back gate status, but it’s not set up for that or advertised to do that so no stars deducted. Maybe that’s a future development opportunity.

I bought this device to allow Amazon to open my new gate. It's amazing and was quite easy to set up. When connecting to the Web I had to call Ring, but I enjoyed excellent technical support and everything made a smooth handshake through my Network via Ethernet. They also helped me with the easy step of linking with Amazon which was very quick. Opening my gate with the Ring interface is easy. I have a Ring Doorbell out at the gate now so I can interact with people and remotely open the gate if required. The Pro 2 is powered by my Mighty Mule gate controller and sends a signal to the gate through a Port setup by Ring during the call. I thought it was expensive, but it's worth the cost.

This product is advertised for "remote gate management"; "built-in cellular network"; "works with Ring products - see who is at your gate". This is all FALSE!Yes, this product will open a gate over a cellular network. But you cannot connect any Ring products to it. I have confirmed this through Ring customer support. If you want to have a camera or Ring doorbell at your gate, you must have a wi-fi signal. In other words, the camera image, motion sensor or press of the doorbell button cannot be transmitted over the built-in cellular. Without wi-fi, how do you know when someone is at your gate, to open it?I am sure that this would work just fine if you have a wi-fi signal at your gate. But if you do, you can use a $20 MyQ to open the gate - $280 less and you don't have to pay a $200 annual fee to operate it.I am simply bewildered that Ring would offer a product so worthless for the advertised purpose. If it is intended only for gates with existing ethernet or wi-fi service, then the description should be changed entirely.

I’m an integrator. This works well. It gives you a button on the ring app, “gate”… pressing it basically makes a contact closure (temporary), so you can just tie it into anything you want. Be it a gate or something else. What it needs is a cover, or it must go into a box. Wires are fairly exposed. It’s also very expensive for a contact closure device. So I gave it 3 stars.

Overall this was a very simple setup.From initialization to completion was about fifteen minutes. If you're a novice with some skill on wiring, you might take about thirty minutes to get this set up.

Update:Been using it for 3 years and still working strong. Great for access control if you don't have wifi etc. Allows you to add users. Opens our motorized gate.Must call ring to finish setup. Worked flawlessly for our liftmaster gate controller.It's not built by ring but 3rd party so you can't control it from the computer browser, only the app. I'm easily able to add users and tenants. Allows lots of users. Love it.

Our goal to install this system was to be able to open the gate remotely with the phone. We changed the nice traditinal Doorking hardwire system with ring, that may have been a big mistake. When people ring the bell the ring is a very short single tone that can be easily missed and people have to keep ringing. When we open the door, for security reasons, one has maybe only 2 or 3 seconds to get in and if they are slow pushing the door open the door would not open and they would have to ring again and go through the process again. In general you need to be Speedy Gonzales to use this system. The only nice feature is that you can see who is at the door ringing of course if you hear the short ring

The setup was not very user friendly but the product works great
