Good Move On My Part to Purchase This Set

Pleased with the set. Nice weight and feel. Fair price. Wished they came in a carry bag so used a CRoyal bag.

Nice quality for less than $20

For plastic pieces, these are great. They fit on 1.5" squares. Good weight to them, felted bottom, and extra queens. It's also easy to distinguish each piece, which is helpful for younger players.

Perfect Starter Set!

I was pleasantly surprised… this is the first chess set I’ve ever owned, but I wanted something more than *just* cheap plastic. These are plastic, which is what I actually wanted, but I sought out a set that had some weight to the bottom. They do have a nice weight to them, I think, and I wanted as much because if they were too light or top heavy I worried I’d accidentally knock them over too much. I bought them separately from a board specifically because I wanted a flat, solid, wooden board as opposed to a roll-up mat or folding board mostly… because I wished to be lazy and play on my bed sometimes. I also live in an area where it would be nice to play outside in the grass or on the beach, and having the weighted bottom is best for playing on soft or uneven surfaces, or if it’s windy. They’re mostly blemishless, have a good feel to them, and are a perfect standard black & white set. I also purchased this set because it was the most affordable version of what I see at the local chess club or, at least visually resemble tournament sets. In fact, I actually like this set BETTER than the local chess club, hah! I appreciate the extra queens as well. As a newfound chess student, I was also hoping to make it as easy on my studying as possible to have my first set be one that is pretty typical in design, so I can more quickly recognize pieces and tell them apart. Plus, despite all the beautiful, expensive chess sets out there I’d love… in the end the regular ol’ original chess set aesthetic seems to be for me. Sleek, minimalistic, and the pieces are gratefully large. They stay upright very well actually, and are not magnetic though they have a green felted bottom. I have them sitting on an uneven bedspread in the photos and they stay upright even when I disrupt the area by moving around or tugging the blanket. They’re difficult to tip over unless purposeful or a larger blunder :) They remind me of those plastic toys as a kid that were advertised as being impossible to tip over as they almost just pop back up. My only wish (though not a big deal to me) is that they didn’t just come in two plastic ziplock bags where there are admittedly scuffs on some from being tossed in together. I don’t really notice, I mostly just had to dust them off from green fuzz after unboxing them. The other side to that is I wish it came with its own storage bag or box for the set… if I didn’t already have similarly sized drawstring bags or antique boxes, I would’ve had nothing to carry them in otherwise. But… overall, super happy and excited to start playing!

THE Set to Acquire for Everyday Use.

I was able to find a good deal on this set just in time for a special occasion. It may not be something that could be considered heirloom-quality, but if you or anyone else in your family has considerable interest in chess, this is the set you should buy before anything else.First, let's explore why this set wouldn't be "heirloom-quality." For starters, the entire set comes in two transluscent plastic storage bags (one for each color), as opposed to a proper chess box. Second, the set is made of plastic rather than wood or stone, and its means of manufacture is rather evident upon acquiring the set. It's pretty clear to see that two halves of a given piece were molded separately, then paired and welded (sonic or otherwise) together. How high of a priority attention to detail regarding this made apparent upon closer visual inspection--the halves of some pieces aren't totally aligned in some way or another, while excess plastic can be gleamed along some of the edges where the halves meet (especially on the Bishops).Detailed as those nitpicks are, however, they are not enough to detract from this set's remaining qualities. The extra weight added provide a sense of heft that provides a sense of control and reassurance upon handling the pieces, especially during gameplay. The plastic has been given a texture that prevents the pieces from feeling cheap to the touch. The felt at the base of each piece helps with the preservation of both set and board. The size and shape of each piece make them feel easy and comfortable to grasp. The convenience of a spare Queen for each side is quite a relief. Finally, the fact that it's relatively cheap means that it is more suited to handle everyday wear, rather than be reserved for special events.I say "relatively" because, as cheap as it is, this chess set is still of MUCH higher quality than most of the chess sets widely available in retail. Indeed, the only retail set that could even dare compare to this one is the Chess for Dummies set, and even there, it falls short in a couple of areas (the pieces are neither weighted nor felted, which puts the accompanying board at greater risk for premature wear). Never mind that including spare queens with retail sets is unheard of, even with the Dummies set.One thing to note--this set welcomes an 18" board (i.e. 2.25" squares). A cheap Pressman board will easily be cramped.Overall, This is the chess set that can be used regularly and holds its own in the process. Its quality may not compare with a set made by Jaques of London, but for regular, everyday use, you cannot go wrong with this set.
