Absolutely worth it!

Just purchased this mantel for my new gas fireplace. It arrived in beautiful condition and was assembled in minutes. 4 bolts to put the mantel together and then simply attach a cleat (included) to the wall and you're done. You could literally have this out of the box and up on your wall in under 15 minutes. It seems to be very well-constructed, as described, of a wood whose graining is similar to oak and is really quite handsome. I bought it unfinished and will be painting it, but it could just as easily be stained - no finger joints or obvious filler.Simple directions and tools included, as well as strips to fill in the projection around the facing of your choice. I am very pleased with the quality, the scheduled shipping and the price of this product.

Magnificent

This mantle was exactly as advertised. Beautiful and very well made. We painted it white. Looks absolutely stunning on the wall

Perfect!

Edit: dry stacked stone does not fit behind the mantle opening but tile would.Mantle was well constructed and easy to assemble. I got unpainted and ended up painting it myself. It painted very well. It is sturdy and heavy. The cost is well worth for what you get. The size was perfect and the dimensions were spot on.

Heavy

This came about a week after we ordered it. Fabulous quality. We are not the best diy'ers and it was very simple to assemble and hang. It comes with a plank of wood you affix to the wall and once the 3 mantel pieces are assembled you simply hang the mantel on the plank of wood the has a section the mantel sets into. It's very sturdy so we are not going to have issues like bending or sagging like our old mantels. We painted 3 coats of white paint/primer. It looks fabulous! Exactly what we wanted. And it's very easy to take down and put up of we ever want to redo the tile inside of it. This will be the centerpiece of our living room and I am very satisfied all around. Quality product!

Great quality and very nice looking mantel

I was skeptical about this mantel at first, but couldn't find any other mantel that would look like a parisian marble mantel. I took the risk given its reasonable price and I'm happy to have ordered it.It was very well packaged and the first thing I realized when taking all 3 pieces out of the box, was the quality of the wood. The description is not very indicative and it was hard to know what asian wood meant. Even though the mantel is hollow in the back, the top and legs are made of thick heavy wood. Once installed, knocking on the mantel doesn't sound empty at all and looks great.Once assembled, some wood filler is necessary to hide the seams where the feet are attached to the top.

It would look nice painted, but this is barely stain grade wood

A couple trim pieces were damaged and obviously packed that way. There are about 3 different types of wood used to make this piece and dont take stain consitently. Almost decided to paint it instead once I saw it in person, but we wanted a stained mantel. It would look nice painted, but this is barely stain grade wood. Wood is overall very fuzzy and needs extensive sanding. Multiple areas had glue residue and would not allow stain to penetrate. I have another pearl mantel which was prefinished and very happy with that one. Not very excited about the quality of this one overall.-I changed it to 4 stars. It is nicely constructed overall. I am just not too excited about how the wood took stain. Maybe gel stain would have come out more consistent. Wish I had some scrap pieces to experiment with different stains. Oil based stain came out very consistent on flat pieces, but sort of blotchy on trim pieces. It looks pretty nice.

Easy DIY weekend project with a big impact to dated fireplace.

We’re very happy with the results. Relatively low cost upgrade of the 90’s brick fire place. We did a white lime wash and white trim painted mantel surround. Easy DIY project over a weekend. The trickiest part was installing the interior trim pieces, which I just used liquid nails to install with some scrap block to brace them. Almost convinced myself to get an air nailer, but that seemed overkill. Used four 5/16in x 2.5in masonry sleeve anchors from hardware store (kind with a removable nut on the exposed end) to mount the hangar board. Yes, two would probably be sufficient. One tip is to drill small vertical ovals in the hangar board because even if you are perfectly level with your bolts the unevenness of the brick might not allow the mantel to seat perfectly. You can loosen the bolts and tap the hanger board with a hammer to adjust. Assemble and hang the mantel without adhesive, then slip painters paper or parchment paper behind the mantel for painting or staining. Lift off when paint is dry, run a bead of liquid nails along the vertical surfaces (remember it will go up, back, and then slide down an inch or so to seat properly). Caulk the spaces and it looks good.

NOT for staining

Quality and price are good. If you're going to paint it. I disregarded the online reviews which said that poplar does not stain well. I used oil-based Minax Pre-Stain Conditioner and then oil-based Minwax Espresso stain, carefully following the directions on the cans, and the result was horrible. Blotchy, dark, with no brown color the color swatch on the can said to expect. In the picture you can see that I divided my sample poplar....which was part of the Pearl surround that we didn't need....into sections and left the stain on for different lengths of time. From 2 minutes on the far right, to 18 minutes on the far left, increasing in two minute increments from right to left. Beautiful, eh? I wouldn't want my dog's house to look like this.I have to ding Pearl Mantles for using a type of wood which is known to stain poorly: poplar.Again, if you'll be painting it...which I guess we'll have to do, which I didn't want to do....it should be fine. But if you're wanting to stain, buy something different.
