Sharp angles, strange forms, lurid colors, and distorted perspectives are classic hallmarks of Expressionism , the twentieth century movement that prioritized emotion over objective reality . Though particularly present in Germany and Austria, the movement’s approach flourished internationally and is today hailed as one of the most influential shifts in art history. With leading groups Die Brücke (The Bridge) and Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), and key players such as Wassily Kandinsky, Egon Schiele ,and Emil Nolde, the Expressionists disowned Impressionism, which they regarded as “man lowered to the position of a gramophone record of the outer world”, to depict instead a raw and visceral experience of life as it was felt, rather than seen on the surface. Their paintings brim with emotive force, conveyed in particular through intense and non-naturalistic color palettes, loose brushwork, and thick textures. Covering the group’s stylistic tendencies, influences, and most important protagonists, this introductory book explores the Expressionist panorama of moods, ideas, and emotions and their abiding quest for deep authenticity. Review: compact, attractive cover, full of great content and beautiful prints - Really nice edition. Matte rather than glossy surface to all pages is gorgeous (there's nothing worse than trying to look at a print of a painting in a book that does nothing but reflect your light source). I could have done without the obnoxious black and white photograph on the back cover (doesn't fit in with the aesthetic of the rest of the book), but you can't have everything. The book is a hardback book with no dust jacket (front print and back photo are on the cover itself). Introductory essay and then for each artist a one-page analysis of a representative work on left with thumbnail photo of the artist and then a full-page print on the right of the representative work. Text is well-written and insightful. You get a lot of text and a lot of great-looking prints for such a relatively thin and inexpensive book. Definitely worth the money. I will be looking for the other books in this Taschen series. Review: arrived on time - product was as described, and arrived in a timely fashion.

Great Little Book!
This is one of the best books on Expressionism. It doesn't go into a lot of detail but enough so that you get a good idea of the period and quite a few of the artists. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get a taste of Expressionism.

This is an excellent book for a person who wants to know more about Expressionism, the painters, and to sit and enjoy the art. It is best when no one else is in the room.

A Basic Art Book
Very good this book about German Expressionism, an influent movement in Modern and Contemporary Art. Specially the paintings are very well analised by the author, after a brief introducing about the movement's history. The painting's pictures reproduction is superb, the book very well edited.

Brilliant
As is usual with Music Magpie, the item was brilliantly priced, arrived when promised and was virtually in mint condition, despite only being described as 'good'. I've used this seller many times in the past and never had a problem.
