Super impressed with this product. It works!

I am really impressed with the Malone Versarail. It is easy enough to attach in just a few minutes (after the initial installation which takes 45 min or so); it is secure enough for highway driving; and it is quiet (it doesn't create wind noise when you are speeding along at 70 mph). The key is to read and follow the instructions. And, I rather think this isn't a good long term solution for transporting kayaks; I plan to stop using it once I see signs of wear.We use it on my wife's 2002 Honda Civic, to carry two kayaks on Thule Hullaport J-hooks. I worried that it would be little better than strapping the boats on the roof with foam blocks. But it isn't like that all all. The product itself is sturdy. The bars rest on large suction cups at the bottom of the adjustable towers. You position the suction cups as close to the edge of the car roof as possible, because that is where the car frame is strongest. So unlike what happens when you strap kayaks on foam blocks on a bare roof, with the Malone versarail you won't dent your roof. The instructions say that the product works even if one of the suction cups gets unstuck. But so far, that hasn't happened. Once you attach the straps that go through the car doors and give each tower a push, the suction cups stick well and the bars are surprisingly stable. The suction cups are easy to unstick by pulling a tab, and they do not leave any marks that I have noticed. The straps and metal buckles are very strong. The straps may not seem to pull very tightly, but once you close the doors they are sufficiently tight. The straps do not vibrate or cause noise as you speed along down the road. The first installation isn't hard, but it is just a bit fussy. You need to position the towers evenly, and the bars within the towers. Don't overtighten the metal screw that attaches the towers to the bars; there is supposed to be some looseness here. You need to position the bars at least 2 feet apart. What we did after the first use was to mark the position of the towers on the car roof with a sharpie marker. The marks fade in time (but we don't care because it is an old car). This makes it very easy to set up for the next trip.We take the Malone Versa rail off the car after each trip and then install it anew for the next trip. I am pretty sure that it what the manufacturers intend you do do. So its not like an expensive Thule or Yakima car roof rack that you install once and leave there for good. The reason to not store it strapped to your car is that sun and rain could wear out the straps, and once they go, the product isn't going to work.We have used it for trips involving a few hours of driving on the freeway with no problem.Be sure to follow the instructions carefully. They say important things like, don't use the product in the rain. Water will run through the straps and into the car. I am not sure the suction cups will work as well if wet. The instructions say to remove dust with a cloth from the suction cups and the part of the roof where they will be sticking. This improves the suction. Be sure to buy the right length bars for your car.I have no idea how long the product lasts. If I see any wear or tear on the straps or suction cups I plan to discontinue using it. For us, this is a very affordable (I think I paid $140) short term solution for carrying kayaks on a car that we do not plan to keep long enough for it to be worth fitting with a $500 to $700 Thule or Yakima roof rack. If you don't have a lot of money but you want to take up kayaking or some other hobby that requires hauling things on your older car, this will probably work for you, for a while at least.

Best value

The excellent quality of these rails was obvious during assembly. The directions are straightforward and simple to follow. I use this rack on a 2013 Prius to carry a 16 foot fiberglass canoe, and it works perfectly. Highly recommend.

Easy to install and made well

So happy we bought these rails. It would have cost a lot of money to have a dealer install permanent rails. We saw this option and jumped on it. So easy to install! They fit perfectly on our car, a 2022 Chevy Equinox. When we first put them on the car and drove about 70 there was a horrible wind noise and we thought we'd made a wrong decision. But when we looked at the installation pictures we realized we had the suction cups over a ridge in the roof, so there was no way the wind wouldn't make noise. Once we fixed that issue the ride is totally quiet. Very glad we bought these!

Easy to install!

I was unsure whether to buy this rack or one of the cheaper foam rafts. I decided to go with this one because I was worried about the kayaks being secure. I am very happy I spent the extra money!I used this roof rack on a Toyota Camry and attached two set of J hooks to the rack. The process of setting up the rack, adding the J hooks and attaching the rack to my car was really easy and fast. It took a little playing around to position the suction cups on a flat part of my roof, but once that was done the whole thing felt very secure. My husband and I have used it a few times to transport two kayaks and it seems very sturdy and we've had no problems. It makes a little noise when we go higher than 65 MPH but it doesn't seem like it's at risk of falling off or anything.

Works very well

I put this on my Nissan Altima. It works very well for a car with no factory rails. I've carried two kayaks on it with no problems. I definitely recommend this product.

simple and effective

Great for my need of occasionally transporting lumber and other large objects.Hopefully this will fit the next couple cars I own. Can't beat the value.

Cheap, flimsy, do not trust it.

Super cheap feeling, rails are held on by cheap suction cups and a strap that doesn’t securely tighten and feels as if it would snap if you put a good amount of force against it. Complete waste of my time and money, cannot trust this to hold my $1500 kayak. Returning this asap!

Value for money, reliable, easy to assemble

I used it along with a 15 sq ft car topper bag, I do not have bars on my roof so I needed something like this. It worked okay, but with many stop and go movements it slid forward a bit (after a week straight of traveling- highways and cities). They work pretty well though, it took a solid week of heat, rain, sleet, wind, and sudden movements to make the suctions slide a bit forward. I have enough trust I'll re use them. Also should note I had probably 50-75 lbs of crap pushing them forward, so that's pretty good imo. Worth the money for sure. Very easy to put together, but if you're a short weaker female like myself, you may need help pushing the suctions down and tightening the straps. Did the job at an affordable cost.

Used it on the Chevy Avalanche tonneau covers. Worked great!

Not good at all

I bought the bars based on the description and photos. For my surprise when I got mine, I realized that they have straps going inside the vehicle that produces a huge leakage of water when it rains. The seller took them back but, big but, he wouldn't pay for the shipping back, this is a big item and it costed me 50 dollars I consider this unfair since the description wasn't accurate. Luckily for me, I spoke to amazon and they reimbursed the money of the shipping. Too much trouble for my taste anyways.
