Of limited, if any, value in repelling nuisance wildlife
In my yard, squirrels and/or chipmunks regularly dig holes to bury -- or dig up -- seeds, walnuts or other rodent food items. Holes are typically between the size of a plum and a tangerine and are usually poorly covered. In a 10-12 foot circle, there can be 3-4 recent holes. I have read in a couple places that by including chive plants as a perennial in the lawn, the chives will effectively repel this nuisance wildlife.I scattered the chive seeds from a half dozen packages in the areas where the animals were most active. I estimate that each square foot of area sown received around 8-15 seeds. The lawn gets mowed every 2-3 weeks depending on weather. I cannot determine whether the chives sprouted because I could not see them among the blades of grass nor detect the chives by smell when freshly mowed. I watered the areas daily for the first week, then once or twice a week for the next 3-4 weeks. The digging continues with the same vigor. While these chives may be among the very best in the kitchen, I was disappointed in their value as a repellent for squirrels and chipmunks. My next plan is to generousny dust the effected areas -- especially the newly repaired areas -- with powdered cayenne pepper and keep my fingers crossed that the varmints don't find that a tasty new flavor.

Nice, simple plant with beautiful purple blooms in early summer
Good value - these chives produce good flavor and really don't need much attention.I planted these in a window box a couple years ago. The first season I brought them in during the winter, and they got by, but weren't great. This last season, I left the box out to see what happens when the stems die out in pacific northwest winter - they had developed a good hardy root system which produced countless shoots in ths spring. This season, the plants have been flowering and produced massive numbers of seeds themselves.

Weak Sprouting!
I have sprouted 2 full trays of these chives and they are growing very poorly. I have many other seeds that are sprouting perfectly (basal, oregano, numerous mints) so I know that it's not the growing conditions. Maybe I just got a bad batch or something like that however either way, not pleased.

Very few made it, but the spot I was hoping to fill gets trampled on by the dogs. So it really is not from the seeds, it was from traffic. I continue to search for something which can withstand my German Shepherd and Boxer.
