Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present (World of Art)

The book came right before I needed it for class and was in great condition.I still laugh every time I look at the back of the book that has a review from D.J. Spooky as I picture a Halloween DJ reading about performance art to get new ideas. Of course that's likely not the case, but it's still great.

While it's impossible to fully catalog a genre of art, this book is a great start, especially for beginners. I use this book in my Performance Art seminar for undergrads, and it is always illuminating for the students.I think they appreciate the traditional step-by-step chronological approach of the book as they learn about this wildly untraditional genre.

Well organized, interesting and easy to read even if one hasn't previous experience in the subject. Has a lot of photographs to illustrate the text.

Simply put, you need to buy this book with caution.The greatest advantage of this book is its documentary quality, BUT at the same time its greatest weakness. For a book of art survey like this one, the majority of readers are really expecting systematic, organized statements of art happenings and insightful, thoughtful criticism, because these are the things that make you think, think seriously about arts. However, the author of "Performance Art" seems to take an very different approach. The author writes as if he/she is writing for a professional newspaper column, babysitting a bunch of hard-core art historians who are curious and eager to understand the nitty-gritty of performance art. Indulging in unraveled jargon and rarely known events, the author tries his/her best to show narcissism in his/her unique capability to recount art history in a visually sarcastic and documentary way. If you are someone who already got an PHD degree in art history, this is probably the best book for you, as I feel the author's thirst to initiate a professional conversation between his texts and audience. Otherwise, you should think twice because I found the style of the book constantly building a concrete wall between me and the history of performance, as if he/she is saying, "if you don't understand what I am talking about, you are not qualified to understand performance art".

Really great book with a mix of images and in depth information on the different performance styles. I am in the second year of my degree in theatre design and this book was recommended to aid studies in theatre styles post industrial revolution and in particular the 19th century. Well worth buying!

Questo libro, in inglese e ricco di fotografie non troppo "invadenti", traccia la storia della performance art in modo piacevolissimo e utile. Consigliato. Spedizione ok.
