The Ridiculously Comprehensive Dictionary of British Slang: Includes Cockney Rhyming Slang

… not as comprehensive as I wanted.

Once for my sister who is studying at Cambridge. The second to help me, my family and my friends have some fun preparing for a trip to London next month.

Has a very LARGE amount of words and phrases that are also widely used in the US (Hey Ian Hall, we have 'gerry rigged' too, dropping the N word was unnecessary. We also say jury rigged). But I suppose if you were not from the US or UK maybe some of this slang would be relevant.I just wish it was more organized by type of slang to keep the excessive cockney slang in its own section. It also would have been nice to have a bit more context around each word (verb, noun, how to use it in a sentence, which locality uses it, which class, tone).But I have to say I still really like the book and found it very useful. It definitely did not shy away from rude words the way some other UK slang books do. Worth the buy.

My British-born husband gave this book as a gift to friends in his office here in the US and it was a huge hit. Highly entertaining and a fantastic icebreaker.

This book is very useful for looking up British slang but it would be more useful if the Cockney Rhyming Slang wasn't included. I'd like to see a version of this book without that. Not being a Cockney and not liv ing in the UK, I don't ever hear this type of slang and I don't consider it endearing. Very little of it rhymes and is mostly just obtuse nonsense. It is distracting and seems to just be there as filler. Perhaps it would be better to publish this book as two separate books: one for Cockney and one without Cockney slang.

Love having this book at hand when we watch British tv series. Don’t see the point of the Cockney stuff.

Bought this for a friends daughter. She is going through an "I can speak with an English Accent" phase, so I thought she would enjoy it - and she did, along with her parents!

Just a listing of British slang and American definition. Thought it'd be more comprehensive, funny, useful. Common words that we all know. Nothing insightful. Returned it.

A little too comprehensive for my needs. I'm teaching English in Germany and we don't need cockney rhyming slange. Think I'm going to go through the book with a highlighter and mark all the other slang so I can find it better. Delivery was fast. Other wise a nice book. Recommend if you are new to the UK
