Preservative for wood with serious wet-rot.

Most people will be buying this to pour into the cooling system of a vehicle, but it has other uses. If your interest is rotten wood rather than frozen radiators then this is a review for you.I bought this anti-freeze it to use as part of a timber preservation process for badly decayed wood in a window frame. The lower part of a frame five foot wide was soggy and crumbly for at least a third of its length. It was so rotten in places that water would flow easily through the frame to the inside. There was no possibility of replacing the frame at that time and leaving it untouched for another year seemed very unwise. A fresh coat of paint wasn't going to be enough, and the wood couldn't be filled in the ordinary way because it was saturated with water. So, serious remedial action was required ...This antifreeze was acquired not because I care about the window getting cold and icy, but because this particular product is Ethylene Glycol. The basic idea is that having got the wood as dry as possible, one saturates it in Ethylene Glycol (this stuff) which displaces the remaining water and also kills some of the wet rot fungus.STEP-BY-STEP:The worst of the rotten wood was scraped away. Small holes were drilled into the remaining bits to facilitate drying of the inner timber and to provide a route for later treatment fluids.A water-proof sticky-tape was attached to the glass just above the frame and used to make a loose shield for the wood so that the rain couldn't get to it but air could still circulate freely over the wood. It was left to dry for a few weeks, at the end of which it was no longer soggy but was still noticeably damp.Copious amounts of this antifreeze stuff were sloshed around the frame and into cracks, and poured down the drilled holes. The loose sticky-tape shield was re-applied and the wood was allowed to dry again. The Ethylene Glycol dried slowly -- very, very slowly -- perhaps because the glycol was still attracting moisture. In any case this stage of the drying process took several summer weeks even with the wood under cover.Once the timbers seemed moderately dry again I applied a goodly amount of gently warmed "boiled linseed oil" which soaked into the wood. The oil helps bind the damaged wood together and also inhibits fresh water ingress. After the boiled linseed oil had dried (another few days) the form of the frame was reconstructed with copious amounts of Ronseal high-performance wood filler resin (marvellous stuff, available in several sizes). Once the resin had been built-up and smoothed off, putty was used to secure the glass and paint applied. The whole process took far longer than anticipated but having seen the result I'm expecting that the frame will be good for at least another two years, perhaps another ten. After that it will need to be replaced because the combination of wood, filler and putty won't be easy to rework. Given that the frames were in very poor condition, the work has been a remarkably cheap way of extending their lives. However, the final success of the work won't really be known until a few years have passed, and the windows are either still intact or being replaced. Meanwhile, as far as could be ascertained, this antifreeze stuff did what was required of it.Anybody wanting this product for a similar purpose might want to consider buying a 1 litre product rather than this 5 litre one because even for several very rotten frames I found I needed much less than I had anticipated.UPDATE in 2019More than six years have elapsed since the repair of the window frame described above, and the repaired frame is still completely solid and waterproof, no problems at all.SAFETY ISSUESBefore using any antifreeze to treat rot or fungus in timber make sure you are buying the correct stuff; not all antifreeze is Ethylene Glycol so you cannot just use any-old antifreeze. The manufacturer might change the formula so read the small print on the container. Other forms of Glycol are NOT suitable.Ethylene Glycol is moderately toxic; it will kill aquatic life, and most other things. One of the reasons it is proposed for timber treatment is because it is one of the few things that kills the rot fungus. Apparently ingestion of Ethylene Glycol causes a few human deaths every year.Ethylene Glycol should not be poured down drains or onto gardens.Ethylene Glycol is a particular hazard for children because it looks like a fruit juice concentrate and has a sweet taste.I'd encourage anybody wanting to use antifreeze for timber treatment to make sure they read around the subject, and read the small print on the container to know exactly what the manufacturer has put in it.

great Concentrated mixture top quality and best price

like most people i bought this on the run up to christmas and the cold spell to protect my engine. it is probally best to drain the system and make up the mixture of part antifreeze and part water (its recommended to use distilled water but your normal tap water isnt going to damage anything.) you can check the resistance to temp by buying a antifreeze tester for about £3 but make sure its propally mixed before testing.what i personally do is create my desired mixture in a watering can use it as top up and then store out of little hands reach wen not using.
