Collins Spanish Dictionary: Complete and Unabridged (Collins Complete and Unabridged)

The most comprehensive Spanish dictionary available
This is a huge dictionary which give huge clear examples of the usage for each word, idiom, and phrasal verb.. I've never seen anything like it. Even the simplest words are shown, as in any language, to have immense meanings and variations. A gold mine for advanced students and translators.

Best Spanish dictionary
Nothing makes this language nerd happier than flipping through an excellent dictionary! The print is a bit small, but not impossible to read. I'm loving all the idiomatic expressions and the middle section on daily life etc. The substantial pronunciation guide leans toward the Iberian, but does discuss the differences on this side of the world. It's a big, heavy hard cover book with a bright orange-red cover. The bottom corner arrived a bit bent but not a big deal.

Comprehensive!
I speak almost only Spanish to my 15 month old son. I grew up speaking Spanish but my vocabulary is definitely lacking when that’s all I’m trying to speak, day in & day out. I own 3 copies of Vox Spanish English dictionary & always found myself frustrated & turning to google translate when the word I was searching for wasn’t there. I hesitated spending $60 on a dictionary I’ve never thumbed through but I figured it was worth a shot. It has been the best dictionary I’ve ever used, hands down! It is enormous & has not failed me in translating a single word since I bought it 2 months ago. I like that each noun has either m. or f., to indicate whether it’s a masculine or feminine word, & it has translations noted which are used in only specific countries. The only trouble I find in using it is that if the word I’m searching for is a compound word, or 2 words combined, it can be hard to find under the original 1st word, if that makes sense, like the word bell pepper. It has been probably the best $60 I’ve ever spent & highly recommend buying it

Comprehensive
Very small print.. It's a keep-at-home dictionary. Bigger print and one Spanish, one English would be more practical i.m.o.

A wonderful resource
You can't judge a book by its cover. The cover on this book is unprepossessing but the content very good. I speak as a student of Spanish rather than a native speaker so can't judge the accuracy of translation but I do own several Spanish dictionaries and this is the most comprehensive as you would expect from the top level Collins dictionary.

The longer I use it the more I love it
The more I use this dictionary the more I love it. I almost exclusively use the Spanish to English section so I can't comment much on the English to Spanish section. My favorite feature is that many words are broken down into different family of meanings, with non-trivial example phrases and copious idiomatic sayings. This provides a rich understanding of the nuances and range of a word's usage compared to a more basic dictionary that just lists a few of the ways a word can be translated.Coverage of colloquial phrases is top notch. For example, in a dialog I came across the sentence "Te estás quedando conmigo?" I knew a straight word-for-word translation would be "Are you staying with me?" But from context I knew that wasn't the intended meaning. This dictionary has, under quedar, that exact usage as an idiom meaning "Are you pulling my leg?" That exactly fit the context in the dialog. I have a few reference works of Spanish slang and colloquial usage, but the Collins dictionary has actually become my first stop when I'm trying to understand an expression like this. The main drawback to this dictionary is that it is quite heavily physically and the print is very small. This is definitely a book to leave at home on the arm of your sofa under a bright lamp. It would not be suitable to take travelling, and it would be a chore to lug it along to a class or study session. I am considering purchasing an electronic version just for the ease of use and portability.

Best Spanish-English English-Spanish Dictionary
You can trust anything published by Collins. I have used their bilingual French-English English-French dictionary for over forty years. So when I decided to learn Spanish, it was only natural that I would turn to them for my new dictionary and I am not disappointed. I am a translator. All of my colleagues use reference works published by Collins. This Spanish dictionary offers translations for just about any word or phrase you might come across along with contexts that help you choose the right translation. A physical dictionary is still more useful than a digital one. As you search for a term, you will come across other words you didn’t know on the same page. These little side tracks help you to build up your vocabulary much faster. You don’t get to take these little side tracks with a digital dictionary.
