You should get 7 shelves and all 7 are moveable you can set up as you like beware some suplyers only give 4 and charge you extra for the other 3 "rip off"

Q: can you buy extra shelves with it and does it come with the necessary fittings

Yes you can buy extra shelves. It comes with 4 shelves and fittings including wall fixings. I had two cabinets, and they both came without a listed shelf support part, but that part doesn't seem to be necessary, so I presume it's been discontinued. Really good product (but package is very heavy!).

Q: Does anyone have a general idea of how much weight can be placed on the glass shelves?

I use my cabinet to display rocks and minerals. Some geodes and rocks are quite weighty but I have no worries about using the glass shelves . Obviously I place items carefully on the shelves but I have up to 20lbs on some shelves. I hope this is of help. The display case itself looks great and was easy to assemble.
