Awesome pack.
This is a true pack the 38 fits everything I need for a long or overnight hike. I am not mountaineering any time soon but how light and comfortable this pack is I recommend it for any outdoor activities.

Simple and comfortable.
I wanted a mid-sized pack that was light weight and comfortable. This pack is perfectly sized for a long day and has plenty of straps to cinch down gear. The only downside is that this is a top loading pack so it can be difficult to get things out of the bottom without emptying everything out. Side zippers have ruined me.

Durable, Reliable and Versatile
The Osprey Mutant 38 breaks the stereotype for me when it comes to Osprey packs. Typically, I've found them awesome for backpacking but overly complex and too strappy for climbing, not ideal for windy climbs to have the straps whip around endlessly. But the Mutant changed my perspective entirely. No straps smacking me in the face, literally or figuratively. For 2.5 years, this pack has been my mountain buddy. I've relentlessly stuffed it with 4-5 days of gear and enough food to feed an entire expedition. Surprisingly, even loaded with over 20 kilos of gear, it held up like a champ. It effortlessly handled long trail slogs and technical climbs with equal ease, providing unexpected comfort throughout and proved to be a dreamy companion in the mountains. However, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. It's not the lightest pack out there and the weight-to-volume ratio isn't ideal. Plus, being a top-loader, trying to reach stuff at the bottom sometimes feels like an unpacking marathon.

Helmet net
I really like this pack but after my first time using it I found the helmet net a nuisance, and after multiple days on Mont Blanc still wasn't sure where the front clips attached. They seem to nicely placed attachment loops at the back but as far as I could work out it just clipped to the edge of the top opening section on the front but maybe not. It should be obvious but it's not.

Leaks like a sieve
My first new rucsac in years. I was always a Karrimor fan but they were mostly a heavier fabric and I was looking for a lighter daysac but one that would take enough gear for a couple of nights away. All the reviews I read raved about Osprey and on the hills I was meeting so many folk with Osprey sacs. Not my first choice as many sacs were not available during the pandemic so I opted for the Mutant 38. My first hill walk with it, Ben Klibreck, turned into into a day of steady rain. As the day progressed I noticed the gear inside the sac getting damp but luckily my spare clothing was inside a poly sac liner. Just as well, everything else was soaked by the end of the day, inside the bag and inside the top pocket. I have never had such a porous bag, a real fair weather sac of little use for the Scottish Highlands. In addition to this, on recent cold snowing days I find the flimsy clips difficult to use with gloved hands. Really disappointed with this product but I am stuck with it now. Wish I hadn't sold off my old Karrimor sacs so quickly.
