Chunks of meat in a dark gravy, looks pretty yummy and the dogs seemed to agree....
We have two 80 lb farm dogs that get canned food mixed with dry kibble twice a day. We get good quality kibble, which is the mainstay of their diet (high meat/protein content, low vegetable/carbs, no wheat or corn). The canned food is basically added, #1-because they love it, and it adds flavor to the kibble and the water that is also mixed into each bowl of food. I get whatever is on sale, 90% of the time it's the 22 oz cans of Pedigree "Ground Dinner", either beef, chicken, bacon or cheese flavor, usually 36 cans at a time when I find a good price. The dogs gobble it up like healthy, active farm dogs do, always looking for more. Came time to reorder, Amazon was offering a case of 12 13.2 oz cans of this Alpo as an "Add On". The price per ounce was the same as the Pedigree ground dinner, so I bought 2 cases. That might have been a mistake! The difference between the two types of food is big...... kind of like going to McD's for a hamburger vs Prime Rib at a fancy steak house. The Alpo chunks and gravy looks more appetizing, more like "human food", with "real" meat chunks in a thick, dark gravy. The dogs seemed to notice..... YUM.....although their eagerness could be just because it's something different, which they often enjoy...but not always, hard to know for sure. I realize, though, that you get more of the ground food per ounce than you do the chunks and gravy. The gravy accounts for a large part of the volume and weight and the contents are not packed tightly into the can like the ground food is, so less food per ounce, which was very obvious when I opened the first can. Even though the price per ounce was the same, the cost of this Alpo chunks and gravy will be substantially higher than the ground dinner. Next order will likely be back to the Pedigree again, which I still consider a good, affordable choice in canned dog food, especially when mixed with a quality kibble. When you're feeding two large, active farm dogs, cost is a consideration, and you take your savings where you can.

Can't believe Purina bought them out and then discontinued Alpo.
I can't believe Purina bought them out and then discontinued Alpo. I think companies like that should not be able to buy out the competition then discontinue the product.

Wow-my dog loves this stuff!
My 14 year old dog has been eating dry Purina dog food for most of his adult life. He's also been on a grazing feeding schedule (no set time, just fill up the bowl and he eats throughout the day).At the last visit, my vet discovered that my dog had lost some weight, and he had cyst in his mouth. She recommended going to wet dog good, and also a regular twice a day feeding schedule. I had just bought a 40lb bag of dry dog food that I didn't want to throw away, so I tried adding water to it, but my dog wouldn't have anything to do with it. My next stop was to the grocery store for canned, wet food. Decided to stay with Purina, and picked up a couple of cans of Alpo just to see if my dog liked it.Bottom line....he loves it! He's now on a morning and evening feeding schedule,, and when it's time to eat, he runs over to his bowl and eats the entire meal (1 1/2 cans) immediately in one sitting. On the one hand, I'm sorry I didn't discover this sooner, but on the other hand, I'm glad I didn't. It's about 8X what dry dog food costs. At least it's a few dollars cheaper per 12 pack here on Amazon vs the grocery store.I think rating dog food is highly subjective. Either your dog will love it or he won't. Every dog is different. My dog just happens to love this stuff. If you're looking for a canned, wet food, you should try it.

Good value
I put a can of this stuff on top of my dog's dry dog food. She really loves it. It is like junk food for dogs though. Has a lot less protein than dry dog food and a lot of fillers and stuff.

Hard to find in stores
I have 2x 2year old Great Pyrenees each over 100lb and a 12 year old lab/heeler mix (80lb). I feed them kibble with 1/2 can of this each mixed in for moisture and flavor. They seem to like this lamb & rice variety. I have bought it before from Walmart, but they are regularly out of stock. The price is about the same as in the store. I have just ordered more I think this will be my preferred way to buy it in future, 4 cartons will last 32 days.

Flavor yes, digestion no.
My dog is on a special diet for bladder stones and there are a lot of ingredients that are in regular dog food that he can’t have. When I ran out of his medicated kibble I searched all over the internet for wet food that would have the right ingredients. I found this one to be the only one. My dog loooved the flavor BUT this food made him super gassy and stinky. It could have just been the change in food and he only ate this for a few days until his usual food arrived, but Idon’t know that I would buy this again.
