Q: What makes the pencil automatic?

The term "automatic" comes later, as a term when the first mechanical pencils required that you twist them to advance the lead. By twisting it however much, more or less came out. The Pentel Sharp was among the first, if not the very first pencil to use a push-button that advanced the lead a Specific Amount with every click. This is what was "automatic"--just the right amount of lead advancing to the tip with a single, quick of a button. It was novel at the time, and the term "automatic" was applied to many things in the 70s that gained the effect of push-button operation, or hands-free help, like self-winding automatic watches, switch-blades, automatic transmissions, automatic umbrellas, auto shut-off faucets and sensors. The term was true to form, not a sales gimmick but a real improvement in mechanical pencils.

Q: How do these compare in writing comfort with Twist Erase with rubber grip? Thanks

These are high quality drafting type pencils, but I have used these for many years for general writing and have never had any comfort issues. If you have used instruments with rubber grips and prefer them, I would say go that way. I hope this response helps you.

Q: Does this pencil have an automatic feed where when the lead breaks the support piece moves and loads a new lead?

No, it does have the “support piece”- a sheath that covers the lead as it’s advanced through the opening. However, should it break, you have to physically click the pencil top to advance the lead. That sheath is only there to lessen the chances of breaking the lead with too much pressure, it doesn’t have the fancy mechanism that other pencils do, but it’s still an excellent pencil nonetheless.

Q: How can you tell the model number of the eraser that fits this P209?

I have green, red and white erasers in tubes and they all fit my P205, P207 and P209 pencils. The tubes don't have a part number on them however the information on the tube only states "Pentel Eraser Refills". If you order, i believe they will work.
