The TEXAS EVERBEARING FIG produces medium-large brown fruit with deep burdy pulp. Grows 30-40 feet. Zone 8-10. In the fall and winter, figs ship dormant with no leaves. The leaves will re-emerge in spring. Our figs are grown by tissue culture from mature cells, which is a superior method that produces ier s that can fruit much sooner than if they were grown by seed. None of our figs are grown from seed; the narrow stems indicate that they are grown from this premium tissue culture method and within months can grow large and robust. This variety is similar to the Brown Turkey Fig and the two, more often than not, are reported to be the same variety. Texas Everbearing Fig (TF) and Brown Turkey Fig (BT) have similar cold tolerance, and somewhat similar looking fruit with very similar taste. A few minor differences reported between the two include the Texas Everbearing having three-lobed leaves as sed to five lobed leaves. (Of course, this can be variable at different stages of growth.) The TF tree is reported to be more upright. There are two major differences, one of which is the heavier first crop with the TE. Texas Everbearing, while not for"ever bearing," does have an extended season. It bears two (good) crops when conditions are conducive. The first crop (breba crop) is usually heavier than the BT's first crop. It ripens late May to late June with the second crop ripening late September through early November. The other major difference is the eye or the point where the fruit skin comes together at the apex. The "closed eye" of a fruit can prevent water, etc from entering the fruit and souring it. Brown Turkeys can have an eye that is open to semi closed. Texas Everbearing has a closed eye. This is especially beneficial in areas with higher humidity and rainfall.
