Nice Pie Plate

This just came in, and it's the perfect size for my needs. I read that you can't tell the size well from the main photo, so I added one with a measuring cup and a soup can for size comparison.

Made a lovely tiny pie!

It was my husband's birthday, and every year I bake a pecan pie. Only this year, he's been working out a lot more and becoming quite fit, so he didn't want an entire pie. He didn't NOT want a pie, however, so I ordered this cute little pie dish. It's heavy, good quality, and it bakes just like my full-sized glass pie dishes. I was able to make a delicious mini pecan pie and my husband was delighted. I'm delighted to add another dish to my baking selection. It's a win-win!

Buy Extras

If you decide to buy these, buy extras. I purchased two (one to use, one to keep as a spare) and one arrived with a defect in the glass (in the bottom right corner).Amazon quickly sent a replacement order, but for some reason, 1 out of the 2 plates had a noticeable chip in the glass in the SAME location (bottom right corner) as the original shipment. Both shipments came with no air cushions or stuffing in the box, just the individual glass pie plates wrapped in bubble wrap.Out of the 4 plates Amazon sent, only two were usable. So, either Amazon is knowingly sending defective/damaged units of this item to customers...Or, the packers filling the orders just aren't taking an extra second to look for damage before the order goes out.Whatever the case may be, buy more than you think you need. If you're not sure about the product dimensions or volume, here are the approximate measurements of the plate(s) that I received:Handle to handle: 7 1/4"Rim to rim: 6"Bottom inside/outside diameter: Somewhere between 4 1/4 to 4 1/2"Height: 1 1/16"Volume: 15 ounces (or 1.9375 cups) when filled to the rim. If you are especially good at rolling out pie dough and are able to create a nice, high edge, I'm sure you could fit an even 2 cups (16 ounces) into a pie shell baked inside this plate. The only thing I don't like about the plate in general—even though I have not used it yet— is that it has a narrow rim, not a flat, wide rim like most standard (Pyrex) pie plates. However, if you are good at rolling/fluting pie dough, it shouldn't be a problem.I just hope the plates last since glass bakeware has become such a crapshoot in the U.S.

PRACTICAL, DURABLE, VERSATILE

Can't shut up about these 6" pie plates from Anchor Hocking. I'm sure they'll make great pies (or personal cobblers, quiches, or baked pasta dishes), but I bought them for my mom as petite "plates" for mini-meals. I can fill these with prepared meat, potatoes, and veggies, pop in the fridge, then reheat via microwave (or conventional oven) with ease. Delighted!

NIce little pie pan if you want a small portion.

Love the small size though I'd have to say I'd like it even more if it were just a little bigger. I have an 8" one that I have had for years and use it all the time. Great for making a pie for 2 people. This one at 6" is just a little on the small side but will help me save calories so that's the up side. It's nice to be able to make a pie recipe and then make small pies instead of one large one. With the larger pie it's hard for 1 or 2 people to eat it all while it's still fresh. With the small plates you can make several, eat one and freeze the others for later. Will probably buy more of these, especially if I can find an 8" one.

Not recommended. Broke in two, first use.

This pie dish, during the first use, fractured in half. We baked a perfect pie inside it, put it in the over for the recommended amount of time given by the recipe--which was designed for a 6" pie dish--and when we pulled the pie out, the pie dish did not come with the pie. The base of the dish separated from the rim with a very concentric manner. This tells me that the dish was not fashioned with superior knowledge about amorphous super cooling methods of glass, and I will rethink this company when purchasing again. If this company would like to try to prove their product is adequate, I will reconsider my review.I realize I was using a ceramic pie bird in this particular baking experiment, but the crust beneath was thick enough not to have the two similar surfaces touching, and I kept in mind the thermal conductivity of the ceramic pie bird while I set the oven timer to well under ten minutes of the recommended baking time.

Exactly what I wanted

For the benefit of my fellow geeks, these are 5.75" diameter across the top, 4.5" across the bottom, and 1.25" from the inside bottom to a level across the upper rim. I filled one to the brim with water and poured it into a measuring cup and found that it held about 15 fluid ounces. (I say "about" because I wasn't using an extremely fine-grained graduate :-)In kitchen terms, this translated to just UNDER half a standard pie pan. I made up a batch of fruit pie filling by a tried-and-true recipe, found that I had a little (maybe a third of a cup) of filling left over, and the mini-pies were so full that they boiled over slightly in the over. That's the volume. On the other hand, I used one ready-made pie crust (which is normally enough to generously cover the bottom of the standard pie pan) cut in half and re-rolled to the smaller diameter, and found that I had to roll it a little thinner than usual to make it stretch enough. It wasn't a lot, and the result was still entirely satisfactory: the crust held the pie very nicely.Bottom line: I like these a lot. They're a good size for making two small pies (one for Mom and one for me) from a single recipe, and they look to be well-sized for home-made pot pies, too.

Exactly what I was looking for -- the perfect size and glass!

I ordered two of these to make individual German pancakes for breakfast, and they are the perfect size. As noted, they are 6-inches in diameter.I can imagine making individual meat or poultry pot pies in them and they are just the right size for a dessert pie for two people. I wanted glass because it is non-reactive. The handles make them easy to manage with hot pads, and the rim keeps things from boiling over, unless you really over-fill them.

Arrived chipped. Way too small.

I bought two of these. I thought they were a little expensive but I really wanted (needed) them. One arrived chipped on the edge. They are also much smaller than I thought they were going to be they are 6 inches across the top, not 6 inches across the bottom. So they are the size of a tart rather than a small pie. But it does say "mini" pie. I guess they are right about that.

Perfect little pies

I used to have soggy pie shells when I baked pies in the tin foil liners and really did not enjoy them. Since then, I freeze the pie in the foil liner in plastic wrap then just peel off the plastic wrap (while frozen) then pop pie filling into the pastry lined glass dish, top with a bit of butter and then pastry top and bake - great pie crust every time!! Sure enjoy making and eating my pies now!

Great for two people!

Great pie plate for two people. We wanted a smaller pie plate as a regular pie was generally too much for just the two of us. This allows us to cut pie recipes in half and make smaller pies. It looks small but we’re able to get 4 pieces out of a “mini pie.”

Mini pie-pan works for small servings

This heavy-duty glass pie pan bakes items well and is easy to clean. Good for people who enjoy pies (sweet and savoury) but only want a small serving, or want to make a variety of small pies.
