The mute works very well, tones down the loudness significantly while still allowing proper intonation. There is also not a lot of back pressure unless you really jam the mute into the horn too deeply, with which you might get some back pressure.Others may disagree but I do not even notice it is there, and I have no issues staying in tune. I do not need to lip any note higher or lower and it works well in the full trumpet range to G5 / A6, which is about as high as I play. The trumpet also slots the same as when I play without it.What is more important is the price of this mute and the value you will get.I have purchased "numerous" other practice mutes with the goal of being able to practice in my home while others are sleeping or otherwise do not want to be disturbed.I have paid as little as $11 - for this mute - and as much as $99 for "professional" practice mutes. This inexpensive mute sounds and plays as good or better than any other mute at any other price. As a bonus, this one is the lightest and least conspicuous of the bunch. If you are looking for a practice mute and you have a standard sized bell then this is the mute for you. However, if you are looking for a specific sound, keep in mind the purpose of this mute is to decrease the volume of your playing. If you want to enhance or change the color of your sound then you need to get the appropriate mute to enhance the sound, which is a completely different type of mute, such as what Harmon would make for their trademark sound, and which Miles Davis made famous. For a practice mute, this is what you need.Ciao.++++++++++Four Year UpdateI did not stop buying other practice mutes and over the course of four years purchased a super expensive 3D printed practice mute made for my horn, a super expensive carbon fiber mute, and a couple I've seen other players use on YT. I figure they play way better than me so they probably know way better than me.But, not so.Another $300 later and this is still the best practice mute I have used. The carbon fiber is probably second. The rest are just not worth even trying.Do yourself a favor and buy this mute. Only caveat is if you have a big bell and super wide taper your horn will suck this mute up and it will be hard to play. That said, it works just fine on my Bach, Yamaha and Blessing.

It’s worth it!

This is A PRACTICE MUTE, not a straight mute. With that being said, it is worth it. Playing for 20+ years, and I can say that is good to have. It is very quiet. It is small but it does fit the trumpet perfectly. If you put the mute in the horn all the way, you will get some resistance if that is your thing. If not, just pull it out very slightly and it will still be quiet. I have played this with my sleeping baby and did not wake up AT ALL. Play it late at night into the morning with no issues. Even can hear the TV while I’m playing. Also good for play-a-longs and transcribing. Tone is not bad for a practice mute. It is worth getting it!!! Oh and the cork is good. If the cork falls off, glue it back on.

def mutes the sound and DOES distort pitch!

Look, I have been playing music for decades. When I put this mute in and realize that what I thought I was playing in Bb I am now playing in B, I realized that mine (at least mine) DOES distort pitch and make it sharp one semitone. All this being said I gave this 4 stars. It works, I mean, it is like half the decibels, so I can practice at night now and the neighbors won't hire a hitman to murder my parakeet. Also, I looked on the bright side of the pitch shift. Seriously, it is a Bb trumpet. With the mute in, it is a B trumpet. So now I can use the same backing track and practice soloing in C minor and C# minor. I don't know.. it was $10 and I use it many times a week. So, good product... but if you want a guarantee it won't change pitch, then spend more $$

Good for practicing, not too good for long tone tuning!

I use this mute every time I practice my pocket trumpet. It does distort the sound of the instrument slightly, making it hard to tune the instrument, yet it does a great job at muting the instrument. This is not a good mute to practice in-tune long tones, but it is usable for other parts of your practice session. I practice about 3-4 times weekly, and there is currently no damage to my mute. Some reviews do state that the cork material is likely to come off over time, and I do believe that if this mute is handled aggressively while practicing it can be easily damaged as the mute is lightweight aluminum with lightly glued cork pads. The material has lasted a while for me, but that is likely due to not handling my instrument in a rush or too aggressively. Overall, good practice mute.

An economical solution

This mute helps to preserve the sound quality in the house, and it did not cost an arm and a leg. It seems to work well.

Ok product, not a silencer though

Overall it's ok and reduces the trumpet volume when playing, but it's not an actual silencer as others have stated. It is very small and fits inside the trumpet, almost disappearing in it. It reduces the air flow, making it harder to play some notes.

After School Practicing

Wow want a difference this makes on controlling the volume of sound coming from my daughters room when she practices. I should have bought this earlier. I used to have her step outside on the deck to practice with the door closed and now she can practice in her room without rocking the house. The noise is much more comfortable to listen to.
